Meet Sydney Seymour
I’m a recent graduate from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (UO SOJC) with a Bachelor of Science, double majors in Journalism and Media Studies and an Ethics minor. With the “do no harm” and “meet people where they are” mottos at the forefront of my work, I aim to cover community-centered, trauma-informed and digital-first stories. As a second-generation immigrant and British-American dual citizen also from the Philippines, I'm committed to highlighting diverse perspectives and cultures.
I’m currently reporting for Ashland.news through the Charles Snowden Program of Excellence and building connections in rural Southern Oregon.
In college, I worked for the UO SOJC as a writing intern, writing feature stories of alumni profiles, faculty research stories, blogs, featured student work articles and news stories. Recognizing the value of adaptability and accessibility in journalism — and being a podcast lover — inspired me to immediately volunteer to help host and brainstorm ideas for the SOJC’s podcast, “One Cool Story,” when the opportunity arose.
I served as the Editor-in-Chief of Align Magazine, an arts and culture media organization with an emphasis on lifestyle and fashion run by UO students and the largest organization on campus. I furthered my interest in audio by founding, recording, producing and periodically hosting Align’s first podcast, “Align on Air, “ which features interviews with UO students. Without any previous audio editing/recording experience, I taught myself Adobe Audition and learned how to use the university’s podcast studio.
As an investigative reporter for the Daily Emerald, I focused on complex, long-form stories and helped the socials desk create and brainstorm complementary video content to text media.
I also took classes within the Game Studies minor to expand my skills in game journalism and gamification, creating a card game based on the SOJC and a newsgame on press freedom. As as a UO-UNESCO news correspondent in Brussels, Belgium for the week of World Press Freedom Day 2025, I practiced international reporting and created a Day in the Life video stories for Instagram.
If I’m not working at a coffee shop, you’ll find me playing either a digital or analog game with friends or utilizing my streaming services.
